How To Leave A Cult
From Toxic Shame to Self‑Love: Surviving Religious Judgment

In this episode of How to Leave a Cult, I share the relationship that became a breaking point—not because it failed, but because of how it was treated when it ended. Ministers and leadership, including Duran, used shame as a weapon—tearing me down and telling me I should have been a whore rather than being in the relationship I was in.
I reflect on the stark inequality inside the cult: how I was placed at the bottom of the hierarchy as a single mother, while certain men were elevated as “golden sons,” protected and praised regardless of their behavior. This episode explores how these power dynamics fuel toxic shame, especially when shame is reinforced through religion.
We look at how religious shame can reach devastating depths—how it infects identity, distorts self-worth, and casts a long shadow over sexuality by labeling it as dirty, dangerous, or sinful.
To close, I recommend four steps for moving from shame toward self-love—tools I believe are essential for healing after spiritual abuse:
1. Practicing compassionate self-love
2. Positive internal dialogue
3. Mourning wounds
4. Choosing self-forgiveness
This episode is for anyone who has been judged, diminished, or made to feel expendable in the name of God—and for those beginning to imagine a life beyond shame.
